Blue Horsehead Nebula (IC4592) | 21.04.25

This one proved to be a real challenge. My settings during acquisition weren’t ideal, leading to quite a bit of walking noise that was hard to edit in post-processing. Despite that, the structure of the nebula and the dreamy blue tones still came through.

The Elephant Trunk Nebula, a striking region of interstellar gas and dust located in the vast IC 1396 complex, is a favorite target for astrophotographers due to its intricate structure and rich colors. This celestial wonder, sculpted by powerful stellar winds and radiation from nearby massive stars, stands as a testament to the dynamic forces shaping our universe.  

Over the course of four nights, I carefully collected the necessary data to bring out the beauty of this nebula. Guiding proved to be quite a challenge with my AZ-GTi mount, but with persistence and refinement, I ultimately managed to stack a total of eight hours. The #sv555 impressed me with its remarkable sharpness and outstanding light-gathering capability, providing incredible detail in the final image.  

However, I must acknowledge that the SV240 filter might not have been the ideal choice for this project. In future endeavors, I plan to acquire the SV220, which should better suit my needs and enhance the results even further.

I recently picked up this amazing and beautiful lens, the SVBONY SV555. In a world of brand competitiveness I decided to stick to my roots after purchasing the SV48p 90mm almost a year ago which had been an amazing scope for my astrophotography.

The lens comes with everything you need to get started with and even the Electronic Focusing tools once you’re ready to upgrade. The lens has a great weight to it and feels solid for the job. An aperture of f4.5 (variable to f22) is amazing for astrophotography and also for terrestrial use. The focusing wheel is smooth and can be locked so that there’s no focus creeping. The rotating ring on the back of the lens is great to ensure you have everything framed the way you want before locking it.

Priced at just over AUD$1,000 RRP, it’s the cheaper than the RedCAT51 and the Sharpstar 61EDP iii. I got mine whilst there was a sale so it was even better bargain than any other refractor in this category. All three are within the 240-270mm focal range which is great for large nebulae, faint reflection nebula and galaxies such as Andromeda.

I have yet to test this out because of a small technical issue. I shoot with an Olympus OMD EM10 Mark ii which I have the conversion to M42x0.75mm (T-Mount). The SV555 requires a an M48x0.75mm connection which means I have a few days till I get to test it out. Unfortunately though due to the 55mm backspacing the SV226 is not able to be mounted in however just means I’ll need to upgrade to a dedicated cooled camera soon.

I did however do a little “hover over the lens” to try and shoot the trees behind the house and wow, sharp, clear and without a doubt a great lens to use. I would say however at its weight it’s not something you’ll see me carrying around for sports events.

I’ll have the full review video once I have the conversion adapter and shoot some astro targets.
